Shopping can be a pleasurable experience for many, but frustrating for others. It helps to know where to go to find what you are looking for. There are a
lot of options with regards to shopping in Ankara – between the supermarkets, department stores, and weekly bazaars, you are sure to find what you need.
Kızılay, considered the heart of the city, is one of the most crowded shopping areas in the city On Atatürk Bulvarı, chestnut trees, sparrows and vivid stores line the street. The illuminated windows, bookstores, pastry shops, restaurants, cafes, business centers and pasajs (arcades) are proof of this city is lively.
Ulus is the old shopping district and it is here that the “Hall” is located. Between the narrow streets you will find plenty of shops which sell electrical appliances. Other streets are lined with clothing shops, although most are oriented towards people with lower income levels. If you walk towards Ankara Kalesi you will find the old and famous antique area called Çıkrıkçılar Yokuşu. The area is loaded with antique dealers and coppersmiths. Additionally, if you are looking for antiques, you won't want to miss the weekly Antika Pazarı in Ayrancı held on the first Sunday every month.
If you go up towards Çankaya you’ll reach Kavaklıdere. Here you will find Tunalı Hilmi Caddesi one of the newest shopping areas and favorite places to stroll in Ankara. It is famous for its pasaj, modern shops, cafes, pastry shops, music stores and cinemas. Kuğulu Park, is at the beginning of the avenue and at the end comes Karum, the most popular shopping mall in Ankara's city center. Another lovely area to explore is Arjantin Caddesi in Gaziosmanpaşa. Several smart cafes, restaurants, famous designer boutiques, home decoration stores, jewelers and gourmet shops will tempt you.
Atakule, the highest building in Ankara is located in Çankaya. The building is 125 meters high and has a rotating tower. It hosts various stores, "Dreamland" entertainment center and the marriage office. An elevator with a glass frame takes you up to the tower for a panoramic wiew of Ankara.
Mesa Plaza, Ankuva, Anka Mall, Carrefour and the recent Armada are located in the shopping districts of newer residential areas. Almost under one roof you will find hundreds of shops, movie theatres, fast food courts, cafes, restaurants and mega grocery stores. Shopping can be less stressful in these locations since parking is not a problem and it is literally one stop shopping – all you have to do is choose.
